When and how to use Ultracet

Ultracet is used for treating pain. This pain relief medication is an analgesic combination and works in selected areas of the brain and the central nervous system to decrease pain. While this medication is safe, there are times when you need to avoid using it. Do not use Ultracet if:

  • You are allergic to any of its ingredients
  • You are allergic to codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, dihydrocodeine or hydromorphone
  • You suffer from persistent diarrhoea when you use antibiotics
  • You have suicidal tendencies
  • You are/were addicted to alcohol, drugs, or narcotics
  • You are currently taking nefazodone, carbamazepine or sodium oxybate
  • You suffer from liver malfunction
  • You are taking any other medication that contains acetaminophen or tramadol

If these health conditions apply to you in anyway, contact your doctor before using Ultracet. Some medical conditions and drugs may interact with Ultracet and cause unpleasant symptoms. Tell your doctor if you are suffering from any health condition, especially the ones mentioned below.

  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • If you are using any over the counter or prescription drug
  • If you are allergic to any medication or food
  • If you have a history of mental problems such as depression and suicidal thoughts
  • If you take more than 2 alcoholic beverages per day
  • If you have recently suffered from a brain or head injury.
  • If you suffer from complications in the nervous system
  • If you are a patient of epilepsy or seizures
  • If you have lung or breathing problems such as asthma
  • If you have a history of intestinal inflammation or bowel ulceration

Ensure that you tell your doctor about heart, pancreas and kidney problems before taking this drug. Some medications are known to interact with Ultracet. Medications such as erythromycin, ketoconazole, linezolid, lithium, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) (eg, phenelzine, selegiline), nefazodone and quinidine do not work well in conjunction with Ultracet. Also, selective serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) should be avoided too.

How to take it?

It is advisable that you use Ultracet only as directed by your doctor. It is advisable to use it orally with or without food. Do not use this medication for more than 5 days on a continuous basis, unless otherwise advised by your doctor. Ensure that you do not take more than 8 tablets in a day. Do not take more than 4 tablets in a day if you are suffering from kidney problems. Never overdose to recover a missed dose. Start your cycle as a normal one as soon as you realize that you have missed a dose.

In case you have more questions regarding this drug, do not hesitate to ask your doctor. Using this medication may cause dizziness and drowsiness. Do not handle heavy machinery when using this drug. Also, do not consume alcohol when taking Ultracet as it is known to cause adverse effects when used in conjunction with the same. Do not use this drug more than what is recommended by the doctor.
